The 6th Science Communication Webinar
Event Summary
A psychologist that became an entrepreneur
Event Report
The "mentalists" and "psychological tests" we find on TVs and the internet lack reliability due to the absence of scientific evidence or wrong interpretations of science. The true psychology deals with statistics and data. The difference between physical quantities and psychological qualities, and the difference in psychological qualities among individuals - "scientific" psychology converts these qualitative data into numerical, quantitative data. Mr. Sawata, CEO at Idea Lab Inc., told us audience about how his company delivers such "scientific" psychology to society, and how every one of us should deal with data that floods the world around us. We've received a number of glowing reviews too. Today's webinar gave us a new insight - "we can work at companies instead of universities and still be a researcher."
We'd like to thank Mr. Sawata for his wonderfully informative and insightful stories, Dr. Zaima for helping our team put together today's webinar, and everyone who joined our webinar today.

What does a psychologist do?
We conduct research by planning out a project by reading a lot of research papers, implementing it to analyze the obtained data to put together a new research project. The main difference between us and college professors will be that they have other things they need to do in addition to conducting research - for example, hosting academic conferences and study groups, and helping students with their academics at college.
I aspired to purse psychology in collage. Is there anything I should do or books I should read while I'm still in high school?
Psychology is a nice mixture of humanities and sciences, so any book will help you be better prepared to study psychology in college. Whether it's a novel, film or play, I'd recommend you to get your hands on whatever that excites you. It might be too obvious, but the thing you need to do before college is working on schoolwork diligently. Psychology deals with math such as statistics, trigonometry and calculus. Depending on the field you're going to be specialized in, you might need to read research paper all written in English as well. For example, my specialization is in measuring brain waves - it requires biology as we collect date associated with parts of human body, and electrics and physics as brain activity is all electric. We also need chemistry and biochemistry in order to understand how electric signals are generated in body. Like so, what you learn in middle school and high school will be the critical foundation for your psychology journey.
What do you like about being both a psychologist and an entrepreneur?
It turned out to be a great fit once I jumped in with both feet. I always enjoy running and managing my company every day, and it's also as enjoyable as it is to conduct research with clients. As far as I know, my employees are enjoying it here too, which makes me so glad. I didn't know it was a great fit for me before I did what I did, but I love how it turned out in the end.
